The Incas built an empire which spread in a big part of South America.  As in this part of the world horses were unknown, the only mean of transportation was on foot, the Incas knew how to use the mountains and valleys in order to develop a very fast communication system.

A sample of this system is the  Qhapac Ňam, a big network of paths of more than 5000km of length that cross the Equator, Peru, Bolivia, Chilli and a part of Argentine.

Thanks to this way, the mail system of the Incas was very fast, the chronicles tell that a letter between Lima and Cusco arrived in 3 days, nevertheless on horse ride it arrived in 13 days.

The Chasquis or Incas mailmen ran in intervals of 4 or 5 kilometres where a Chasqui Wasi or Post office was located from where a relief started off with the message.

The Qhapac Ňam also had every 7 kilometres a Pukara or a custom where travellers validated their rights.

A part of this path between Cusco and Machu Pichu can be visited by tourists.
